The First Television Recordings

Imagine life without a VCR or digital recorder to recorder your favourite Television program.
A very bleak picture indeed!

The worlds first Television recordings were done using a stylus and turntable similar to a record player.

Television Station Test Transmission Graphics

Before television stations ran a 24 hour a day broadcast schedule, they would use the non scheduled broadcast time to test and tune their broadcast equipment. They would use various graphics to visually test camera and transmitter performance.

Here are some examples :

Original American Television Networks

Before the introduction of cable or satellite television there were 4 television networks.

1939 CBS, 1941 NBS, 1946 Dumont, 1948 ABC

The Dumont television network succumb to financial pressure after a 10 year period, but launched the careers of several well known television personalities.

Prior to the establishment of the CBS network, television broadcasting and program production was done on a local level using very primitive equipment. Stations used several methods to broadcast their video content. These included both mechanical and electronic video transmission systems. CBS was able to set the standard for television stations and television receiver manufacturers.

Origins Of Television

Television first appeared as a mechanical apparatus, that consisted of a spinning disk and photo-electric vacum tubes.

The video "signal" was taken from a standard radio receiver and the audio "signal" was taken from a separate radio receiver.

The video quality was very poor due to the mechanical process involved.

How Scenic Radio Works

Continuous video broadcasting on the Internet, requires dedicated network servers that run special software. This requires large amounts of bandwidth and the rental of a dedicated network server. ( This would require a fantastic amount of money for a large viewing audience. )

Scenic Radio uses special server scripting to randomly select multimedia content for on demand video presentation. On demand video presentations allows viewers to pause the video at any time, then continue to watch that same scene at a later time. Viewers can also "rewind" a video presentation to view a previous scene. ( These features are not available with continuous Internet broadcasting. ) The on demand video presentation requires only a standard web host account that can process server side scripting.

Scenic Radio uses the multimedia content available through Google video, YouTube video and other social video web hosts. This allows the submission, indexing and presentation of vast amounts of multimedia material, without the high price of bandwidth for content distribution.

Scenic Radio brokers the needs of viewers ( content access ) with the needs of social media hosts ( content distribution ).

Television Broadcasting from Airplanes

Back before commercial satellite service was feasible, electronic engineers were pondering the concept of using aircraft as broadcast platforms.

One of the essential requirements for broadcasting on the frequency that television stations use, is the height of the transmitter antenna. The height of the antenna determines the coverage area of the broadcast signal.

This idea led to a research project known as Stratovision. A fleet of aircraft would circle the country and provide local television broadcast coverage, then relay the broadcast signal to the next aircraft for re-transmission. The broadcast content would be originated on the ground and beamed to the aircraft for broadcast.

The Stratovision concept was adapted for television instruction by several colleges. This program was inaugurated as the Midwest Program on Airborne Television Instruction.

Airplanes were also used as a mobile broadcast platform in Vietnam by the AFRTS ( Armed Forces Radio Television Service ). This operation was known as Project Jenny. The US military uses the same technique of airborne broadcasting for PsyOps today. The aircraft are known as Command Solo. Both operations Project Jenny and Commando Solo aircraft allow(ed) the broadcast of radio and television signals for reception by the local populace.

At one point, the famous UK pirate radio station Radio Caroline, was rumoured to have contemplated the use of airborne television transmitters to provide pirate TV service to the British Isles.

For a humorous look at airborne television broadcasting, watch the movie Riders of the Storm.
Disgruntled Vietnam War veterans operate S&M TV, a pirate TV station that broadcasts from an airborne B-29 airplane.

Video distribution on the Internet has come a long way.

The first wide spread video streaming method was called CuSeeMe. This came out in the mid 90's when 56 Kbs was considered blazing fast. Nasa broadcast video from Shuttle missions and educational presentations using CuSeeMe. Several colleges also used CuSeeMe to broadcast their student run terrestrial radio and television stations.

You can read a online version of a book written about CuSeeMe here : Internet TV with CUSeeMe.

P2P ( or Peer to Peer ) was not always considered the Holy Grail for online multimedia broadcasting. IP Multicast ( or MBone ) was once considered the Gold standard for universal multimedia data delivery. Unfortunately, this technology was never fully implemented on the open Internet.

You can also read a online version of a book written about IP Multicast here : IP Multicast
